books, sharp objects and Brian Dettmer.

Just found a new art crush: Brian Dettmer.

A book surgeon, carefully carving away pieces of pages, until an insanely amazing discovery is left behind.

"My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception"
~Brian

More Here, here, here, and here.

*wow*

  1. Oh, wow. Don't you look at his stuff and say to yourself, "Now why didn't I think of that??" One part of me hates him for destroying old books, and the other part wants to hug him for making something so amazing. Thanks for sharing this!

(FYI, that last link is bad. It's got an extra "http" in it.)

  2. Kt~ i know, right??

also I am just blown away by the fact that he is merely revealing what's already in the book. it becomes this collaboration with it, with the unwitting publishers, etc.

For as much as I love reading, and books... I find myself strangely drawn to the kind of book art that alters and damages them, making them useless as books anymore.

(oh, thanks for the heads up about the link! fixing now <3 )
