Dreams, demons, and fairy tales: that's the kind of stuff that makes me tick. Especially as they are rendered upon the silver screen.
Some of my favorites, from off the top of my head:
Mirrormask
Labrinth (more jim henson! plus David Bowie. /swoon)
Jan Svankmejer's Alice
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Pan's Labyrinth
and finally, the truly horrific, Jacob's Ladder
ick. the youtube formatting is a bit funny on this one, sorry about the spill-over. /shrugging.
ReplyDelete(this post is reminding me that I need to see Science of Sleep)
ReplyDeleteI've seen some of these and liked them, the others look really good. The last one looks scary. I don't know if I'll watch it.
ReplyDeletejacob's ladder is scary and disturbing and horrific on a lot of levels. If you are sensitive to such things, I would avoid this one.
ReplyDelete(have you seen pan's labyinth yet? just to be warned: that one also has some fairly horrific elements; it is a very dark fairy tale overlaying a very dark reality)
YES! I feel like weeping with joy everytime I meet someone else who love's Svankmajer's Alice. Pan's Labyrinth is also fantastic and heartbreaking. Excellent list
ReplyDeleteSteve! ah bless~ A kindred spirit! Now I'm weeping too!
ReplyDeleteI usually get blank stares when I bring up Svankmajer's work. Alice was my introduction to him and I've been in love ever since.
Thanks :)
